Stuart Melis, Alto Sax and Flute, is a
professional musician currently based in the Dallas- Fort Worth area. A
graduate of the Wisconsin College Conservatory of Music, he has also pursued
further studies at North
Texas State
University. While in Milwaukee, he was a member of the Sig Millonzi Big Band
(later the Jack Carr-Ron DeVillers Big Band), as well as La Chazz, one of the Midwest’s premier Latin Jazz Orchestras.
Since moving to the Dallas area in the 80’s, he toured
extensively with and was a featured soloist with the bands of R&B artist
Johnny Taylor, and blues singer Bobby “Blue” Bland. He has performed at major
national and international Jazz and Blues festivals including the Monterey, Montreux, North Sea,
Nice, and Paris Jazz Festivals. He now is a freelance performer in the Dallas area, working with many of the area’s most notable
bands and musicians, including Bob Stewart and Company, Dallas Brass &
Electric, Soul Caribe, The Texas Chamber Orchestra, Dave Alexander’s Legends of
Western Swing, and is currently playing lead alto with Galen Jeter’s Dallas’ Original Jazz
Orchestra.
He has backed up many major stars over the years,
such as Glen Campbell, Aretha Franklin, Donna Summers, Frankie Valli, The Four
Tops, The Temptations, B. J. Thomas, Harry Connick Jr., Bobby Shew, and
performed with the Orchestras of Les Brown, Les Elgart, Guy Lombardo, Bob
Crosby, among many others.
Stuart also maintains a private lesson studio, and
has had several students make the Texas All State Honors band, as well as
achieving highest marks at the State Solo & Ensemble competition.
