The Tom Wirtel Series

Anand - This piece features a trumpet soloist throughout and is based on the changes in "A New Approach To Jazz Improvisation" By Jamey Aebersold, Vol. 5, "Killer Pete".  Accordingly, the soloist can practice his part utilizing the Abersold disk.  The ensemble writing utilizes French Impressionist techniques originated by Darius Milhaud.  These are applied to jazz harmonies for some unusually colorful effects.  Scored for three flutes, clarinet and bass clarinet.  The lead trumpet is written to a high "D" with the solo trumpet to high "C".  A full score is provided to expedite subtle balances in the ensemble.  Medium Difficulty. $40

Ariane - Lyric ensemble ballad featuring contrasting tonal colors between brass and saxes.  Twelve-tone serial melodic content is complimented by extended bitonal harmonies.  Develops into bossa nova during a sax soli and closes in original tempo.  Intense musical work highlighting techniques used by Alban Berg.  No solos.  10 brass, 5 saxes, bass, drums, optional French horn and tuba (no piano or guitar).  Lead trumpet written to high "E".  Medium Difficulty  $50

Hey Bev - An exciting fusion in two, alternating with Latin and swing sections.  Offering challenging and colorful changes for tenor, trumpet and guitar solos, this piece has a number of options for expanding the instrumentation to include four hours in F, a full concert string section and three-part women's voices (singing bebop syllables).  The options can be used singly or in any combination.  Lead trumpet is written to a high "C-sharp".  Medium Difficulty  $55

Miami Beach - A high-energy samba with "open" funk solo sections for tenor and guitar interspersed with chromatic and coloful solo changes for trombone and piano.  Lyrical melodies fuse with Brazilian carnival rhythms to make this piece buoyant and driving at the same time.  Scored for soprano, alto, two tenors, bari, three trumpets, two flugel horns, four trombones and rhythm with extra percussion.  The three trumpet parts are high but carefully spaced with appropriate rests.  Full score provided.  Difficult  $65

Miss Wu - The chart begins as a bossa nova and soon moves into Latin and double time swing sections.  It features solos for flugel horn, alto sax, drums, trombone and tenor sax.  It has optional parts for two flutes and vibes.  A festival winner!  For a soloist to practice, chords came from "A New Approach To Jazz Improvisation" by Jamey Aebersold, Vol. 5, side 1, track 2. Monaghan - Written in memory of John Monaghan. Glowing double-time light rock feel.  Unusual and colorful harmonic, i.e., textural and contrapuntal writing with solos for trumpet and trombone.   Harmonic content based entirely on "sus-chords".  Nine brass, 4 saxes (SATB), bass clarinet, four rhythm.  Lead trumpet is written to a high "G".  Medium Difficulty  $55

Nes-T-Co - Solid, big band sound for the young jazz orchestra.  Colorful harmonies spotlight this Nestico-styled composition.  Written solos for tenor sax and trumpet sound improvised.  Written for five saxes, eight brass and four rhythm.  Lead trumpet to high "A" above the staff.  Ideal for teaching the basics to a beginning band program.  Easy  $45
